Christ Alone

I have one desireHere they come! In the mail, on TV, on radio, online. One catchy phrase after another.

“Lose the First 10 pounds On Us!”

“Change Your Life For $1”

Ads for inspiring New Year’s fitness resolutions. Everything from competing agencies promising to help you lose weight, to local gyms eagerly inviting you to become their next new member.

After all, it’s almost Jan 1st. A New Year means new resolutions made by well-meaning individuals wanting to change various aspects of their lives.

I went online and quickly browsed a number of the “Top Resolutions” lists. Health related items such as diet, exercise, and losing weight topped the lists, followed closely by financial goals of spending less money and saving more.

Also mentioned were personal and self-help ideas; maintaining current relationships and making new friends; and learning new skills or taking up new hobbies.

Unfortunately, more than half of all resolutions fail. In fact, according to polls conducted by Franklin Covey, one-third don’t make it past the end of January.

More interesting to me was the fact that out of the dozens of lists I skimmed through, only one had any mention at all of spending more time with God or of making Him a first priority.

Only one!

Little wonder why so many fail. Including me.

The Bible says,

In Him we live and move and have our being

                                          Act 17:28 (NKJV)

How, then, can we accomplish anything in our own strength?! We can do nothing apart from Him!

Which is why, my only goal for the year 2018 is

Intimacy with Christ

I don’t want to spend all my time counting calories, or points, or steps. I don’t want to be consumed into working myself down into a size 7 or to have abs like Jennifer Lopez. I don’t want to be caught up with the latest episode of everyone’s favorite sitcom. I have no desire for recognition or promotion at work. I don’t long for a mansion in the best neighborhood with the heated swimming pool, tennis court, and four car garages. I don’t even play tennis or have four cars, for goodness sake!

I just want to know Christ

It is in this place where all lasting changes are made.

PRAYER: Lord, fully consume me with your refining fire until all the dross is removed and your reflection can be seen clearly in the pureness that remains. Amen.
