The Wrestling

“I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” Romans 7:15

cryingThey pretty much threw me under the bus. Rather than defend me, they took her side. She now felt even more justified in treating me the way she had.

I’d be lying if I said it didn’t bother me or that I didn’t stew over it for hours. The truth is, I stewed over it for three entire days!

Let it go!

“Ok, Lord. I’ll let it go,” I said as I thought about confronting them to let them know how I felt and to ask them how they expected me to do my job when she knew they weren’t going to back me up.

“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.” Hebrews 13:17

“Ok, but . . .”

Let it go!

“Yes, I’ll let it go, Lord,” I said as I thought about how she had not returned my phone call when all I wanted to do was let her know I wanted to work with her to do whatever it was that would be easiest for her. Instead, she sent a rather defiant response naming my leaders in the email and copying them for support. “Ok, I see how it is!” I said to myself as I thought about how I might respond.

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with a blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:9

“But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For He gives His sunlight to both the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.” Matthew 5:44-46

“Yes, but . . .”

Let it go!

“Yes, I heard you, Lord,” I said through tears of frustration and utter humiliation and defeat, all the while wondering why this was happening to me and what in the world I was to do next.

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:3-8

My friends, do not fight against life’s difficulties. Embrace them as God-given opportunities for growth and change. Rarely, if ever, do these opportunities come when everything in our lives is going great. God is quite aware of what you are currently going through, but He is more concerned about your response. Wrestle, if need be, until you have the victory of surrendering and submitting to His will!

PRAYER: Lord, thank you for not letting me get away with the sin in my heart. Teach me your ways that I might not sin against you. Amen.

  1. Whenever the word “wrestling comes up scripturally, I think in terms of Ephesian 6:12, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Anytime we think we, or any human, is in control, we need to review this passage, and the surrounding promises of the protection available by donning the WHOLE armor of God!
