As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Mark 5:36 – NKJ
Each year, around the months of Nov and Dec, I earnestly pray and ask the Lord for a word that describes what the upcoming new year may have in store, what my response should be to the situations I may have to face, and in what areas of my life does the Lord want to bring change. I also ask God to confirm that word so that I know it was indeed from Him and not just something I made up in my own mind.
I wish I had thought about writing these down when I first began doing this many years ago. The list would have been quite the testimony of God’s faithfulness to me and evidence of His constant hand over my life. But it’s never too late to start. Here are a few examples of the words God has given me over the last few years:
2012 – New Beginnings
2013 – Endurance/Perseverance
2014 – Hope
2015 – Contentment
2016 – Goodness
In retrospect, I can now see how each “word for the year” so accurately described the things I experienced or had to go through. It helped that I kept a journal to help remind me of things I may have otherwise forgotten. What a blessing to see God’s goodness to me, especially through the most challenging times.
For 2017, I believe the word for the year is, Only Believe. I share this with you because God not only wants us to believe that He is, but also that He can do everything He says He can do. I’m speaking, more specifically, about his promises to us.
There are hundreds of promises in the Word of God, but we tend to believe some more than others. Or we whole-heartedly believe them for someone else during their time of need, but have trouble believing them for ourselves when we are struggling through a difficult season in our own lives. Maybe there are some promises for which you feel you do not have enough faith to believe at all.
Let 2017 be the year that you dare to believe! Take God at His word. Believe He will come through for you just as He does for others. In fact, believe He will do greater things for you than you have ever seen Him do for anyone else.
Believe that He will heal you completely. Believe He will bring your prodigals home. Believe He will provide you with the best job you’ve ever had. Believe He will mend and restore your broken marriage. Believe Him for favor, promotion, and great success. Believe Him for divine protection. Believe Him for that major breakthrough. Believe He will not only meet all your needs, but will also lavishly give you the desires of your heart. Believe Him for the impossible, and watch Him bring it to pass.
Prayer: Lord, help me to believe every promise you’ve made to me. May I believe without questioning or wavering. Help my unbelief. Amen.
